watching and enjoying cinema of old and new

You name it!

“Allen is a maverick in the distribution business. He doesn’t have
to think outside the box, because to him there is no box. Just
endless opportunities to reinvent the film distribution business
with new technologies leading the way. He is a pioneer and is
extremely articulate about the ever changing nature of the
business.”

Benjamin Odell
Producer, Sangre de Mi Sangre (Grand Jury Prize, Sundance 2007)

“It’s been a pleasure getting to work with Josh Levin, a filmmaker who understands the intricate nature of releasing films theatrically and on dvd. While at Film Movement, Josh has provided exceptional insight into the changing marketplace of foreign language and arthouse films. And now, as we plan to launch Beautiful Losers, a documentary that speaks not only to artists and designers, but youth culture as well, we turned to Josh to provide consultations on how to best reach a younger audience in a meaningful way.”

Rich Lim

Producer of Beautiful Losers and Executive Producer of Favela Rising, winner, Best Documentary Feature, International Documentary Association

“Allen Chou’s lecture on distribution and niche marketing was a
wonderful eye-opener. I was coming into the documentary film industry
with a background in business and an MBA. So I really appreciated the
insight into the incredible competitive demands he and his company
confront. Faced with a very crowded market for attention, their
passion was clearly about how to get their filmmakers’ work in front
of an appreciative audience. I still think about his lecture whenever
I walk into the video store– which is frequently– and face that
crucial customer decision: ‘What do I want to watch tonight?’”

Eric Glatt
Student of Allen Chou’s guest lecture at New School, New York, NY

“Allen is a passionate distribution executive; he understands the
independent film market very well and is an expert at finding creative
means to get niche films out to the audience who appreciates them”

Christina Rogers
Head of US, Latin America and Worldwide Theatrical Sales
National Film Board of Canada

“Working with Josh was an education for me as a first time feature doc director. It was a great experience and i was impressed by his willingness to commit to doing what it takes for a very difficult film. Together, we shaped marketing materials, sought out and devised promotional events and saw the DVD go through its birth process. Josh’s qualities as a distributor include being honest, meticulous, patient, persistent and caring.”

Michael Ney

Director, LIBERTY IN RESTRAINT and founding member of OZDOX – The Australian Documentary Forum

“The digital age has changed the traditional model of distribution for independent film. For every opportunity it presents there’s another challenge. Allen helped me understand the opportunities and at the same time helped steer away from the pitfalls to get the most out of the projects I was attempting to maximize”.

Tim Sullivan
Former Buyer, Netflix
Former Manager of Product Analysis & Buyer, Blockbuster Video

“Allen Chou is, quite simply, an absolute expert in independent film marketing and distribution, both online and offline. He and his company provide the little guys with big-market opportunities, and in the process, help filmmakers become smarter about the pitfalls in this business and how to avoid them. Beyond that, he may just be the nicest guy in the industry. I recommend EVERY client of mine to Allen, because he makes me look good!”

Adam Chapnick
President, DocWorkers

Unique films and marketing campaigns

terrible scripts and sloppy filmmaking

Hey All NYC and Tri-State area Indie Filmmakers:

Just wanted to announce our Internet FIlm Marketing workshop next Thursday in NYC taught by Distribution Executive, Allen Chou.

Some of you may have attended our last successful film distribution workshop in May at FIT. We went through all the surveys and most people checked off that they were most enticed and interested in learning more about INTERNET FILM MARKETING. We are not one to disappoint the people, so we THEREFORE have dedicated a workshop JUST for THAT!

Description and info is below.

In the meantime, if anyone has any questions on the workshop OR on film distribution in general, PLEASE feel free to e-mail me and I am more than happy to help you out. OR visit www.marketmymovie.com

Learn how to use the internet to create buzz and word of mouth for your film, without spending any money on advertising! This internet film marketing workshop will cover:

- How to perform keyword research so you can find websites that’ll help promote your film.
- The top 4 social media and social networking websites that will generate awareness for your film while generating massive traffic to your website.
- How to optimize your website so you can be found on the results pages in Google, Yahoo, and MSN.
- On-line publicity strategies

Internet marketing consultants charge $500-$1000 for consulting fees. Internet marketing companies can charge $3000-$10,000 for a 3 month film marketing campaign. Maybe you want to do-it-yourself, or maybe you want to understand what a film marketing company will or will not do before you hire them. Either way, this class is a must if you’re producing, marketing, or distributing a film.

This internet film marketing workshop will sell out fast, because the private room at the Telephone Bar can only handle a small group– so register early. Don’t forget to bring your notebook, pens, and some extra business cards. It’ll be a great learning and networking experience!

Date/Time: 8/14/08, 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Location: Telephone Bar 149 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003

Class: Internet Marketing For Your Film

Fee: $40 (includes light appetizers)

To reserve your ticket, please visit http://store.indiedocs.com/dclass.html

Thanks for the invite, but I am already fully booked for May 17th. I am going to the Business of Art Conference hosted by NYFA (AIGA NY is also holding at art/biz event that day as well) AND NYU is having Alumni Day for my undergraduate class. Good luck with your class.

Wow. You are quite the busy bee Tracy. I am a film
distributor looking for that "Next Big Thing". We have a film
distribution class coming up that might be interesting for your friend
who is producing the "RingWood" Documentary (its funny, I have lived in
Jersey all my life and never heard of the town, so I'm intrigued). I
have some discount press passes left, so if I could put one on the side
for
her if she is interested. It is normally $350, but the press pass
allows someone to register for $75. If she signs up, I am more than
happy to allow you to attend with her free of charge. It'll be a great
opportunity to Network with other filmmakers as well.

Let me know as I DEFINATELY would like to work together on something with you.

i am working on a bunch of things, but not a "film" per se. I just wrapped up my first semester teaching Electronic Publishing as an adjunct on the Masters level at NYU. I am hard at work developing an educational/nutritional product that involves production of an instructional video: http://www.ayurvideoproductions.com/weekendcleanse.html And I have recently begun prep work (dubbing Beta tapes to MiniDV for eventual editing) of a historical documentary about the town of Ringwood from the perspective of our late town historian. This is fascinating material recorded by a friend of mine in Ringwood who is also a TV director and cameraman. I also work as a volunteer for my local public access channel. I'm hoping the product will be big when we lauch it this summer and that eventually, we'll find a funding source for the documentary. Meanwhile, I teach (which I do enjoy) and look for paying work.

And you?

Hey Tracy!

Thanks for the Kudos. The age should change, we just put a random number for our company, guarantee I personally am a little bit older. ALWAYS fun to meet another Jerseyite as well! Are you currently making a film right now??

05/07/2008 15:56:30

Wow! You have an extraordinary amount of experience for one so young. I am seeking opportunities to work with other independents, so if you want to work with another Jerseyite, feel free to contact me. My stuff is viewable at http://www.tracefx.com/
