Stephanie Higgins’ storytelling career began immediately after learning to write. Her poems and stories won dozens of awards and recognitions throughout her school career. Higgins moved into the video storytelling medium in 1998 when she led the reorganization of the University of New Hampshirre’s student broadcasting club, SCAN. She helped raise, budget and allocate $20,000 needed to move SCAN into the digital storytelling age by purchasing the school’s first non-linear editing systems and Canon XL1 miniDV cameras. The group has gone on to become a fully functional 24-hour campus-wide broadcast network watched by almost 10,000 students at the school. After leaving UNH, Higgins attended Emerson College to enhance her visual storytelling skills. Before graduating in 2000, her Masters Thesis “Drive Thru Love” won the coveted EVVY, a contest judged by some of the most prominent industry professionals, for Best Graduate Video.
This success led Preston Productions, a state of the art events production company, to peruse Higgins and offer her the position of Media Specialist. In this position she took on the roles of video editor/producer, writer, DVD Authorer, and web programmer. Three years later, Higgins left to found SassyMedia. In the four years since, SassyMedia has worked intensively with Bose Corporation on many of company’s emotionally impactful high quality visual experiences shown in their retail locations.
In 2005 SassyMedia completed its first film, “The Gay Marriage Thing.” It was Stephanie’s directorial debut and a breakout success. Receiving national distribution within months of its completion, the film continues to screen in film festivals across the country and is available to non-profit organizations, educators and home audiences through The Cinema Guild (www.cinemaguild.com).
On the heels of the continued success of TGMT, Higgins has accepted the position of Executive Producer on the feature film “Millies.” “Millies” is the brainchild of writer/director Lorre Fritchy of MasterPeace Productions and marks the first feature film to be made with Higgins and Fritchy’s synergetic filmmaking philosophy.
