How to create independent documentary films

Event Details

  • This lecture is designed to help you get your film out of the "I'd like to make a documentary" phase.
We'll start by looking at the three main phases of production (Pre-, filming and Post-), fund-raising, marketing, licensing/permissions and distribution.
The conference will include a Q & A session after a brief, but informative presentation about the process of documentary film making.
Covered topics include: Script writing, storyboards, equipment, budgeting, music licenses, legal requirements, fund raising and marketing.

    Introduction from the Conference Host:

Hi! I'm Rick Wood, freelance photo journalist, filmmaker and author of "Nature Aware."
My main passions are education about animal conservation and socially responsible photography. I've been a journalist for the past eight years and have had work featured in several magazines, dozens of newspapers, CNN iReports and through many other nationally known media outlets.
I am a severly hearing-impaired (from Meniere's Disease) combat veteran, devoted husband and father. These days, I can be found working on wildlife documentaries in Florida. My current film, "Journey Home," is an in-depth look at endangered sea turtles and the heroic folks who are trying to save them.
You will find animal issues at the heart of all of my work.
My more than five years worth of experiences photographing bears, Orca whales, seals, foxes, Olympic marmots, American bald eagles and otters in Washington State led to my debut book, Nature Aware.
I truly hope to connect with people and share my experiences and insights on animal conservation and the environment.
    Cheers,
    -Rick
