Thoughts on some movies

  • Well, it has been AGES since my last entry. I've become something of a queen of procrastination--originally I meant to write a line or two of my thoughts on each movie I see, but I just haven't been in the mood to sit down and write recently.

Finally now though, I feel like I've gathered a bit of nerve to do it, so here's the line-up for today's entry: One Day, Becoming Jane, the Sherlock BBC series from 2010, and Warrior. Not bad for procrastination, right? I've honestly watched more movies and TV shows on Netflix and other streaming sites than those, but those four were the only ones I found worth mentioning.

Just an aside--I'm kind of strange with my movies. Unlike books, I don't terribly mind spoilers if I didn't find the trailer intriguing in the first place (and I always YouTube for a trailer before watching a movie, it's a habitual practice). Anyhow, most of the movies and TV series I watched were ones I have never heard of before, and most of them I just skipped around and ended up not finding anything interesting enough to talk about.

    So here we are.

I think I'll just give my two cents on each movie/TV show in the order I listed them, which is not actually the order I saw them in--not that it matters.

    On One Day...

If a movie is based off a book (and not the other way around), then I make the trip to a library or local bookstore and give that book a read prior to watching the film, mostly because it just seems proper to do so.

In this case, I wasn't particularly too impressed with either medium, but what I did find commendable was the fact that the movie stayed fairly true to the book, as far as I could tell. Would I watch it again? Ehh...maybe on a rainy day. It's one of those movies.

    On Becoming Jane...

I actually ventured onto this title after watching the 2011 remake of Jane Eyre starring Michael Fassbender. I became a fan of McAvoy and Fassbender's acting after X-Men: First Class, and I decided to check out what other films they've done. Ironically, I wanted to see the 2011 version of Jane Eyre before I had even been more exposed to Fassbender, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out he was one of the two main actors in that film.

Anyway, while I didn't really enjoy the story about Miss Austen in Becoming Jane--mostly because I knew it was based on her life which meant it wasn't going to be a very happy ending--I was definitely charmed by McAvoy's acting. It was worth watching, but again, like One Day, I am not sure if it would be worth watching again unless I had nothing much else to watch.

On the Sherlock BBC TV Series (Season 1, 2010)...

I put this in my Netflix queue over the summer and at the time, I hadn't had any idea what to expect from it. I basically had too much time in my hands and just queued every movie and TV series imaginable where either the image thumbnail or plot summary seemed interesting enough.

I am definitely glad I did. This series was wonderful, and I believe everything about it was of very good quality. It was only a shame that there was only 3 episodes, and that I will have to wait until 2012 for the next season. It'll be worth the wait though, I think. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are absolutely believable and lovable as Holmes and Watson.

On a side note, I do enjoy Robert Downing Jr. and Jude Law's interpretation of Doyle's characters as well. I think I enjoy both interpretations equally, mostly because they're so different from each other--one is more serious while the other is definitely more humorous.

    On Warrior...

I have mixed feelings about this one, mostly because of how it ended. First though, I'll admit without shame that I am a huge fan of Tom Hardy, and that was the main reason why I wanted to see this film. He did not disappoint with his acting, though I'm not too sure about the accent he used.

I thought everything in the film was great until the end, where it just seemed to cut off abruptly. While I think I get the filmmaker's intention for it, I just disliked how many loose ends there were in the plot. A lot of mini-storylines could have been given some closure.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about what I've seen lately. The next movie I plan on seeing comes out next Friday called Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. So, until next time!
