INT. OFFICE - DAY
CAMERON MOORE, a very attractive, semi successful, brunette, business woman is depressed as her best friend GINA approaches.
GINA
This muffin you baked for me is amazing. Thank you so much.
CAMERON
Sure.
GINA
What’s wrong?
CAMERON
Besides the fact that I hate my job; I’m getting married soon and Jimmy isn’t the same.
GINA
What do you mean?
CAMERON
I guess I mean romantic. There’s no romance. He used to bring me flowers, cook me dinner, give me a card for no reason-
GINA
Flowers are expensive and you work until ten o’clock every night. Men can’t wait that long for food. And romance is a two way street. When was the last time you gave him flowers?
CAMERON
His idea of romance is a “nooner.”
GINA
When was the last time you went home for lunch and served yourself up?
(beat)
Maybe you’ll get some flowers out of it. Isn’t he off this week?
CAMERON
Yeah, he met with Liz this morning to discuss the music.
Cameron changes her tune.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
You know what, you’re right. I’ll go home for lunch.
GINA
And as far as your shitty job goes; you should open up a bakery. I’d come work for you.
Gina savors a big bite of her muffin.
INT. APARTMENT - DAY
Cameron enters as her fiancee JIMMY DUNCAN, average looking, slightly overweight and sloppy, pours himself a soda.
JIMMY
Hey baby. What are you doing here? I said I’d take care of the music.
CAMERON
I’m not here for that. I’m here to-
Liz, blonde and perky, exits the bedroom in her panties and one of Jimmy’s t-shirts.
LIZ
I love the way this shirt smells.
(beat)
Cameron.
CAMERON
Liz.
Liz ducks back into the bedroom.
JIMMY
I can explain.
CAMERON
You fucked the wedding planner. I don’t want details. I want blood.
Cameron approaches.
JIMMY
It was just physical-
Cameron belts Jimmy who falls down backwards.
CAMERON
How’s that for physical?
EXT. STREET - EVENING
Cameron wanders around with her head hung low. Tears stream down her cheeks as she crosses a street without looking as if welcoming her own demise.
As she crosses a car speeds at her.
STRANGE MAN
Lookout.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN
Cameron lays on the pavement as the strange man kneels over her. She opens her eyes.
STRANGE MAN
Are you okay?
CAMERON
I think so. I mean, I’m not hurt.
STRANGE MAN
This is a busy intersection. There should be a streetlight here.
The strange man helps Cameron up.
CAMERON
Thank you.
Cameron walks off.
EXT. STREET - EVENING
Still depressed, Cameron lumbers along until she passes a photographer’s studio.
She stops and turns. Confused, Cameron looks closely at an eight by ten photograph in the window.
ANGLE ON
It’s a wedding photo of her and a very handsome man.
INT. PHOTOGRAPHER’S STUDIO - EVENING
Cameron enters to a dark, mysterious studio and taps the BELL on the counter. A small ASIAN MAN appears from a back room.
ASIAN MAN
(broken English)
Can I help you?
CAMERON
Yes, there’s a picture of me in the window and I don’t remember it.
ASIAN MAN
My daughter handle clients.
CAMERON
I’m not a client. That’s what I’m saying. And if I never was a client and I’ve never been married; how is my wedding photo in your front window?
ASIAN MAN
I call my daughter.
CAMERON
No. Come look.
Cameron walks to the window, the Asian Man follows. She reaches for the photo.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
May I?
The Asian Man nods his head yes. Cameron takes the picture down and shows him.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
This is me.
The man looks closely at the picture and points to the girls wrist in the photo.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
What? What are you pointing at?
ASIAN MAN
Art.
Cameron looks down at her inner wrist revealing her tattoo. The girl in the photo doesn’t have a tattoo.
CAMERON
I’m sorry. I’m being ridiculous. I can’t believe I did this.
She looks at the man.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
They say everyone has a twin.
ASIAN MAN
You are very beautiful. Men very lucky with you.
Cameron manages to CHUCKLE at the faux pas.
CAMERON
Are you saying I’m a slut?
(beat)
I’m kidding. I know what you mean. Thank you. I’ll put this back.
The Asian Man retreats to a back room. With the photo still in hand Cameron looks, again, at her tattoo. Upon further inspection she notices she’s wearing a ring. She immediately flips her hand over exposing the huge diamond attached to it. It shares the finger with a wedding band.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
What the-?
Suddenly, the man in the photo enters. His name is STEVEN and he’s even more handsome in real life.
Cameron stares at him, looks at the photograph, back at him, back at the photo, then back to him.
STEVEN
What are you doing here?
Cameron is silent when Steven just approaches and gives her a soft peck on the lips. She’s frozen.
STEVEN (CONT'D)
I told you I’d pick up the receipt.
I had to take special leave to do this. You said you would be way too busy at the store to do it.
CAMERON
I forgot.
STEVEN
You forgot?
(beat)
Well, I have the afternoon off, are you hungry?
CAMERON
I can eat. I’m hungry. Starved. I could eat a horse. I’m not gonna-
STEVEN
Eat a horse? I’d like to see that, actually.
CAMERON
Okay.
STEVEN
I was kidding. I don’t want you to eat a horse.
CAMERON
I know. But I can.
INT. CAFE/DINER - DAY
Cameron hasn’t touched her food. She only stares at Steven as he finishes his burger.
CAMERON
I noticed in our wedding photo-
STEVEN
Can you believe they put it in the window?
CAMERON
My tattoo. It’s not there.
STEVEN
You’re not changing your mind again, are you?
(beat)
You’re the one that wanted it airbrushed out. I was fine with it.
CAMERON
It’s okay. I like it gone. It’s gone. I’m happy.
(beat)
Can I keep the ring?
INT. CAMERON AND STEVEN’S APARTMENT - DAY
Cameron and Steven enter an artsy, spacious, studio.
CAMERON
This place is awesome.
STEVEN
I’m glad you like it. You live here.
CAMERON
Of course I do.
Cameron turns around and sees a large hutch filled with their wedding memorabilia. Every corner she looks in she sees signs of a special past with Steven.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
Our wedding must have been beautiful. I wish I remembered it.
STEVEN
You weren’t that drunk. Were you?
She takes a leather jacket from the closet and puts it on.
CAMERON
This jacket is so me.
STEVEN
Are you okay?
CAMERON
You are my husband.
STEVEN
And?
Cameron grabs the back of his head and pulls him into her kissing him passionately.
Steven lifts her up and places her gently but passionately on the kitchen counter. He pulls the leather jacket off her when the phone RINGS.
Annoyed, Steven stops.
STEVEN (CONT'D)
(sarcastic)
I wonder who that could be?
Cameron has no idea.
CAMERON
We don’t have to answer it.
STEVEN
She’s got some timing. You know as well as I; she’s relentless. Let’s get it over with. Answer it.
CAMERON
Me?
STEVEN
I’m not talking to her.
Cameron answers the phone.
CAMERON
Hello.
(beat)
Mom!?
(beat)
How did you get this number?
(beat)
I mean, I don’t remember giving it to you.
(beat)
I’m fine. Steven’s great.
Cameron rubs her hand softly on Steven’s cheek as her mom continues to YAP on the phone.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
I’m in the middle of something. Gotta go. I’m having a very weird but awesome dream and I don’t want to screw it up.
Cameron hangs up as her mom is in mid sentence.
CAMERON (CONT'D)
Where were we?
She yanks Steven in close and kisses him hard. They tear at each others clothes.
INT. HALLWAY - EVENING
A dark hallway of an old building. Cameron comes to a door.
ANGLE 0N:
A sign on the door reads:
Jake Mann - Private Investigator
BACK TO SCENE
Cameron KNOCKS.
JAKE
Come in.
INT. JAKE MANN’S OFFICE - EVENING
Cameron enters as Jake Mann, a very professional throwback to the fifties gets out of his seat to greet her.
JAKE
Cameron, I suppose. I’m Jake. It’s nice to meet you. Have a seat.
Cameron sits.
JAKE (CONT'D)
What can I do for you?
CAMERON
I want you to investigate my husband.
JAKE
You suspect him of having an affair?
CAMERON
No. He seems very loyal.
JAKE
Is he stealing money from you?
CAMERON
Oh no, I don’t make a lot of money.
JAKE
Don’t tell me, I hate these kinds of cases - How many children do you have and do you suspect him of being inappropriate with all children or just your own.
CAMERON
My God no. It’s not that at all. We don’t even have children.
(beat)
At least I don’t thinks so.
JAKE
Then what are you here for?
CAMERON
I need to find out about my husband. I just need you to tell me about his past - our past.
JAKE
Do you have amnesia?
CAMERON
Yes, that’s it - amnesia!
JAKE
I take my work very seriously. If your husband is doing something wrong, I’ll help you. Otherwise, don’t waste my time.
CAMERON
Please-
JAKE
If you want to get your memory back then spend time with him or talk to your mother.
CAMERON
She’s in on it.
JAKE
She’s in on it?
CAMERON
(backing up)
I mean, she also has amnesia.
JAKE
I think you should leave.
EXT. PARK BENCH - EVENING
Gina sits with Cameron. Gina eats a cheese danish.
CAMERON
This afternoon I made love to a total stranger and get this - he’s my husband.
GINA
Steven?
CAMERON
You know him?
GINA
What kind of question is that? I was the maid of honor at your wedding and I introduced you two.
CAMERON
When?
GINA
Hello? Five years ago, on Valentine’s Day.
CAMERON
Valentine’s Day 2002. The fireman? He’s a fireman?
GINA
That’s right.
CAMERON
That’s so hot. But I didn’t go; I was sick.
GINA
It took me an hour to convince you to suck it up and go for it, but you went. I was right, wasn’t I?
CAMERON
So I never met Jimmy.
GINA
Jimmy who?
CAMERON
I have to go for a walk.
GINA
Do you want company?
CAMERON
I want to be alone for awhile.
EXT. STREET - DAY
Cameron walks the streets suddenly very aware of her surroundings. She notices that her surroundings have changed.
She comes to the corner where she was almost hit by a car. There is a streetlight there. She stops a WOMAN.
CAMERON
Excuse me, how long has this streetlight been here?
WOMAN
About three years. It went up around the same time the bakery opened.
Cameron peers across the street at the bakery. The sign in the window reads:
CAMERON’S TASTY TREATS
STEVEN (V.O.)
You said you would be way to busy at the store.
Suddenly Cameron’s cell phone RINGS. She answers.
CAMERON
Hello.
(beat)
Where?
INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT
Cameron KNOCKS on an unmarked apartment door.
NATHANIEL BECKET, dressed in a tweed blazer, pocket protector, thick glasses, baseball cap, corduroy pants, and a metal ring around his neck answers.
He holds out his hand.
NATHANIEL
Nathaniel Becket. Please, come in.
CAMERON
I’m Cameron.
They shake hands. Cameron enters.
INT. NATHANIEL’S APARTMENT - NIGHT
NATHANIEL
This is a special day.
CAMERON
What do you have around your neck?
NATHANIEL
This detects low energy cosmic rays. It doesn’t do it alone, of course. On the other side of that door is a ten million gigawatt computer that collects the data. This is like a remote control.
CAMERON
Can you take it off? It’s freaking me out.
NATHANIEL
I’ve only begun to freak you out. Would you like some tea?
CAMERON
Chamomile.
NATHANIEL
Coming right up.
Nathaniel takes off the collar and makes tea.
CAMERON
How did you get my number?
NATHANIEL
Jake Mann. I work with the police, private investigators and psychiatrists all over the city. I even have contacts with the F.B.I. I go to them and I ask if they have inquiries like yours.
CAMERON
Like mine?
NATHANIEL
Let me get to the point. You’ve crossed over.
CAMERON
You mean I’m dead?
NATHANIEL
No, no.
(considers the possibility)
Maybe. I mean, you might be dead in the other dimension. I don’t know for sure. What I do know is you crossed over from one dimension to another and in this one, you’re very much alive. You see, there are an infinite number of paths we can take in our lives. You jumped from one path to another.
CAMERON
How?
NATHANIEL
That’s what I’m studying. That’s what you can help me with. The important thing to know is; you’re not alone. I’ve crossed over, myself. In fact, thousands of people every year disappear and are never heard from again. They’re considered abducted. Some of them are. But most are crossing dimensions.
CAMERON
Why?
NATHANIEL
I don’t know. Are you happier in this world?
CAMERON
I just got here.
NATHANIEL
Based on first impressions; your limited time here. If you could choose; would you go back or would you stay?
INT. ELEGANT RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Cameron and Steven sit at a table not far from the front door. They don’t notice another COUPLE enter and sit at the table directly behind them. The woman sits across from her date and back to back with Cameron.
CAMERON
What’s going on? Did I forget something? Is it my birthday?
STEVEN
It’s October. Your birthday is April third.
CAMERON
My birthday is April third.
STEVEN
I got you something.
Steven hands her a card.
CAMERON
What’s this?
STEVEN
It’s a card.
CAMERON
Why? What’s the occasion?
STEVEN
I need an occasion to give my wife a card. How’s this for an occasion? I love you. That’s the occasion. And I’m buying you dinner at your favorite restaurant for “I love Cameron” day.
Cameron opens the card and reads. Tears well up in her eyes.
CAMERON
I’m so lucky.
STEVEN
I’m the lucky one.
ANGLE ON
Suddenly the doors burst open and Jimmy storms in. He is ragged and angry as he approaches the table.
JIMMY
How could you? I loved you. I still do. How could you just walk out on me? And how did you meet someone so fast?
Jimmy drops to his knees a foot or so from Cameron.
JIMMY (CONT'D)
Please, take me back. I love you.
CAMERON
You cheated on me!
STEVEN
What?
Cameron looks at Steven.
CAMERON
I can explain.
She turns her attention back to Jimmy.
JIMMY
Do I know you?
Suddenly, the woman sitting behind Cameron, only inches away, turns to Jimmy.
It’s Liz.
LIZ
Get a grip. You are a sad man. I’m done with you. You were a toy for me. I grew tired of you and I have a real man now - and we’re trying to eat. So scram!
Cameron turns to Liz shocked. As there eyes meet it’s obvious Liz doesn’t recognize Cameron.
CAMERON
Mind your own business.
JIMMY
How could you be so cruel?
ANGLE ON
Two SERVERS grab Jimmy and - not so gently - escort him out.
JIMMY (CONT'D)
(yelling)
I never loved you!
BACK TO SCENE
Liz gets back to her salad.
Cameron turns back to Steven.
STEVEN
You know him?
CAMERON
Not in this life.
FADE TO BLACK.
