My Favorite Films of 2011 with brief reviews

  • 2011 was a fantastic year for movies. In no way is this list about the best films. It is about my favorite films and is subject to change when I finally get around to seeing The Artist. Lets have a discussion also in the comments below. What was your favorite film of 2011?

    1. Drive

A deep character study, a refreshing style of filmaking and great performances round out the best film of the year. Can you get any cooler than Ryan Gosling?

    2. The Tree of Life

The most artistic, best directed and shot film of the year. The Tree of Life is truly beautiful. "The less you love the more your life will flash by." Terrence Malick is one of the most unique directors living today.

    3. Warrior

For me Warrior is the most underrated movie of 2011. It has an amazing story, characters that are fully devolped with powerful performances, and an ending that will have you on the edge of your seat cheering while crying at the same time. Warrior is the Rocky of our generation.

    4. 50/50

Beautifully written and one of the years best performances by Levitt. It will be a shame if the Oscars snub such a great drama/comedy.

    5. 13 Assassins

Let me break this movie down for you. The first hour is putting the team together and the next hour and fifteen minutes is a battle scene remarkably put together.

    6. Moneyball

I was a little hesitant watching Moneyball, baseball is a sport I don't care about at all, but I was very wrong. Jonah Hill steals the show with an Oscar worthy performance. Also, Chris Pratt (Parks and Rec) shows off his dramatic acting chops and does an outstanding job.

    7. Midnight in Paris

The one word review would be "delightful". Finally, Woody Allen finds himself again with a well written and acted comedy.

    8. Melancholia

Lars Von Trier's style is something you can't ignore and is so unique. With his beautiful high speed shots and his work with Dunst. Originality is the key here and Lars does it well.

    9. Tyrannosaur

A powerful drama and beautifully acted. Peter Mullen gives the best performance of the year in my opinion.

    10. The Descendants

Alexander Payne knows human emotion and you can tell by this film. We laugh, we cry, and we learn to deal. That's exactly what this movie is about. Living.
