Back In The Saddle Again

  • So, I guess this is my first blog on here.  Wow!  I'm not really much of a blogger, but I figure it's a good way to keep a diary of my adventures in film making all over again.

Yes, I've been a lazy ass lately.  Took a year and a half from any serious work to go into - *gasp* - politics of all things!  Turns out, many of the skills that one learns in the film production world also apply to politics as well: be smart, speak your mind if you know what you're talking about, keep it shut if you don't, be a hard worker, and a handshake is worth a thousand baby kisses.

Well, I'll leave that last bit for you to figure out.  Anyway, I have had some adventures this year.

Just finished editing a short documentary about a public school for Deaf and Mute education in Sana'a, Yemen.  If you don't know where Yemen is, go to Gaza, travel south for two hours as the Boeing flies, and it's on the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

My friend, Jessica, is working on her Fulbright scholarship and decided that for her thesis, she would produce a documentary.  Well, before this, she had never done any film production work before, although she knew plenty of people who did, like myself.  I guess that's why she asked me to help.

Well, I thought it would be fun and that if she sent the raw footage to me, I could have a rough cut by the time she flew back from the Middle East.  Unfortunately, all of her interviews are in Arabic and she was evacuated due to political unrest and came home early.  She was sick, we worked 10-hour nights (she had other things she was working on during the day), but got it done in a week.  It premiered at the Tallgrass Film Fest this last fall.

So, now I'm picking up right where I left off -- developing and pitching a television show for HBO, a low-budget political comedy, and a short film about what the French refer to as "je ne sais quoi."  I am a double major, Poli Sci and French.  God, why did I leave film school for THIS!?!?

Anyway, that's it for now, and toodles.
